Byfield, Massachusetts


Byfield, Massachusetts, USA is a community located about 30 miles north-northeast of Boston on Interstate 95, about 10 miles south of the New Hampshire-Massachusetts border. It is part of the town of Newbury, in Essex County. It was named in 1904 for Colonel Nathaniel Byfield. Originally located around the Byfield Parish Church, which is now within the boundaries of Georgetown.

Byfield was the home of Governor William Dummer. The town was granted a ZIP Code (01922) and post office following a visit from John F. Kennedy when he was visiting Governor Dummer Academy, a prep school now called The Governor’s Academy located in Byfield near Massachusetts State Route 1.

Located in Byfield, Triton Regional High School serves three towns: Salisbury, Rowley, and Newbury. An arts center and Pearson’s deer farm are also located in Byfield. The Byfield Snuff Co. was a successful business at the beginning of the twentieth century. The town consists of mainly residential homes with a few local business. The Newbury Town library is located in Byfield on Lunt Street.

An exciting event called "Byfield Days" takes place during the first weekend in June. A Miss Byfield is crowned as part of many amusing activities.
